Ten things do we do at Pain Busters Clinic
to help fight fibromyalgia

by Gary A Clark, myotherapist

  1. Because much of the pain suffered by fibromyalgics is caused by myofascial trigger points, we find that gentle stretching of the myofascia brings considerable relief. We use the highly successful techniques pioneered by Doctors Travell & Simons
  2. Laser therapy using an infrared soft laser also helps to remove painful myofascial trigger points, and start tissue regeneration by encouraging "ionic transport" the process of moving nutrients in, and waste products out of the body's cells.
  3. Dietary supplements such as high quality magnesium and malic acid, selenium, vitamin E, and sulfur amino acids have been shown to help improve painful muscles.
  4. Slow release vitamin "B " complex will help to produce more energy.
  5. Co-enzyme Q10 helps reduce fatigue in many cases. This is because muscle biopsies taken from some fibromyalgics, have shown the Mitochondria to be in very poor condition. Since the Mitochondria use Co-Q10 to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP). the stuff that body cells use to produce energy, is it any wonder that fibromyalgics suffer fatigue.
  6. If the person has a low metabolic rate, Thyroid insufficiency should be suspected as hypothyroidism is common with Fibromyalgia and can be contributing to the problem. Iodine supplementation, T4 "Thyroxin, or T3 Tertroxin, or Armour desiccated thyroid, may need to be prescribed by a medical practitioner.
  7. Gentle massage and myotherapy can be beneficial.
  8. Appropriate shoes/insoles for foot cushioning & supportIneffective foot support, especially for people with Morton’s Foot, ( 2nd metatarsal longer than the 1st ) can cause Peroneal and Gluteus pain, even in normal people, and doubly so for the fibromyalgic.

  9. Dietary changes are frequently suggested to the sufferer of Fibromyalgia.  Hypoglycemia often accompanies fibromyalgia, making it worse, so balancing the diet to higher protein & essential fatty acids and less carbohydrates can help. Reducing the intake of simple carbohydrates has been reported as helpful by many fibromyalgics.  For more information on lowering carbohydrates in your diet see http://www.lowcarb.com.au.
  10. Avoid deep tissue massage, it should NOT be used, as it will almost always cause a painful "flare up." The reason for this is that really deep tissue massage actually damages some of the minute muscle fibers or "fibrils" The body's top priority is the repair of any damage, so it diverts its limited resources to repairing the damage done by deep tissue massage. Any sort of damage can cause a flare up, even having your teeth de-scaled by the dentist.
